If you have seen the news the past few days then you are aware of the horrible wildfire that is consuming Fort McMurray, Alberta since Tuesday. As of Friday, the fire has reached 85,000 hectares and as of Sunday, it had reached to 161,000 hectares. I haven't stopped watching the news every single day because this one particular hit me hard and pulled at all my heart strings since that used to be my hometown and it is still the home of my friends and some of my family.
Thankfully, everyone (80,000) was evacuated and no one was killed because of fire. There have been a ton of homes that have been destroyed but so far downtown and mines are still intact and families are safe and together. That is the most important part. Things can always be replaced but lives matter more.
It is so strengthening to hear the love from Canada and the quick hearts to give theses evacuees peace of mind by providing shelters, food and more. I am sharing all the ways you can get involved as well as information for evacuees to help them along in the meantime.
How You Can Help:
Donate Supplies: There are many things they need right now such as new toiletries, socks, underwear, new pillows, basic sweat pants, t-shirts, pet food/supplies, baby food/formula, water, diapers/wipes and bedding. Find lists of other things needed and locations here on this dedicated Facebook page.
Donate Space: You can help provide a space by providing your home or a room in your home for evacuees to stay for free. Airbnb is helping out by waving fees between May 3 to May 21. You can add your place or room here.
Donate Time: If you are unable to provide your home or give supplies, then time is the best way you can help. Take the time to volunteer help your fellow Canadians during this time of tragedy. You can apply here.
Donate Money: When you are too far away to do what has been listed above, there is nothing greater than the power of money. Donate, donate, donate! Right now, the government says they will match private donations made to Red Cross. To donate, enter here. To donate $5 text “REDCROSS” to 30333.

This is still on an ongoing matter and again, my heart goes out to everyone in this situation right now. I want to do my part by helping to get the word out so that everyone get to continue to get the help they need. Be sure to share this post because it is a great way to get information out there.
