How to Turn Curtains into a Duvet? I bet you never asked that question before. It wasn’t my first idea but my bed was in need of a serious change. Honestly, I was only looking for fabric at Fabricland to create a duvet for my bed when I saw this amazing already made duvet on the display bed. Perfect, I thought… until there was no more for sale.
None. I tried everything, asked the employees that worked there but nope there was none. I been looking for a bed cover for a while now but never found something I really liked so I thought making one would solve my problem except when I find something I love they don’t have it. They only had the curtain in this fabric. As much as they called it a sale, I spent $100 (still makes me cry) on two gray AINSLEY Back Tab Panel Pair curtain sets.
I normally hand sew my clothing creations and somehow avoided ever having to use the sewing machine (that includes the time I took fashion class in high school) but I had my grandma visiting during this project and thought she is the perfect person to teach me how to use the sewing machine that we own but barely ever use.
It was time to learn because now that I have my son, I don’t have much time to hand sew anything using the machine will speed things up. So now this is my very first sewing lesson on the sewing machine and my very first sewing project. I skipped the little practice sewing projects and went straight to the test.
This curtain is 96 inch x 96 inches (244 cm x 244 cm) per set and we only had one sewing needle for the sewing machine so we had to make sure it did not break. Since we are using a curtain there was extra fabric for where the rod would have been resting.
I took out the thread from the side to remove the extra fabric.
Next, I turned the curtain with the print facing down and started to pin one side of the curtain to one side of the matching pair.
After it was pinned, it was time to step on the peddle and start sewing.
I sewed the top, one side and the bottom of the duvet. For the second side, I made sure to leave an opening in the middle area so that I could put a blanket inside if I wanted to. I made sure to take out the pins after sewing before fixing the duvet properly.
Easy to open. I will add velcro later to keep the blanket out but for now, it works fine.
I put my duvet inside. (Yes it is leopard print.)
It took most of the day to finish (just in time to go pick up my siblings) but I finally did.
The gray goes very well with my silver bed frame.
*Tip* If you find the duvet to be heavy take the inside liner of the curtains out.
Now my bed looks refresh and I can sleep in my new duvet. I still can’t believe I made this. It was a lot of fun creating and learning. Time-consuming but so much fun. I did forget a pin inside so I got poked a few times. It was tricky locating it but after getting poked again, I finally found it!

Great job! My oldest dd wants to redo her room and we find lots of curtains she likes, but we're having a difficult time finding a comforter. Maybe this is a good solution for us.
