Why AI Shouldn’t be Your Home Designer

Okay, so AI is everywhere right now. You already know this, because every tech-bro on the planet is pushing it, plus every single company in existence, for whatever reason, is pushing it too (or mislabelling regular coding as AI, but that’s getting off track here). Anyways, AI is everywhere, it’s in everything that’s creative, so yeah, that goes for home renovations and general home design as well (and of course on Pinterest, so many pictures have that “AI Modified” label on there).

Now, sure, when it comes to the little things, it’s fairly okay that AI is being used. If you want to see if blue curtains look cute or if a certain sofa style fits your living room vibe, sure, have fun with it. If small things like this help you create your dream home, there’s literally no harm in it (well, except for the environment, of course, but that’s getting off topic here).

But when people start acting like AI can replace actual renovation planning, well, that’s when things get messy, and that’s when it’s literally a terrible idea.

AI Can Make a Pretty Picture (That’s All)

So yeah, AI can spit out a stunning image of your living room looking like a magazine cover, like Architectural Digest or something, and your brain goes, “Yep, that’s it. That’s my future home, I’m obsessed.”  Yeah, that makes total sense, because everyone wants to see the potential of their home. But unlike you, unlike a designer, and unlike trusted renovation professionals, AI doesn’t get your home.
It doesn’t know your dodgy plumbing situation, the slanted floor in the hallway, the bad (and old) electrical wiring. It can’t, and it won’t. So think of it like this: it’s a filter, it’s a beauty filter that removes imperfections.

AI Doesn’t Get into the Nitty-Gritty

It literally can’t, it’s not possible. Yeah, the things said above were technically nitty-gritty too. So, you have to keep in mind that people forget that renovations are more than a Pinterest board come to life. So, you have to keep in mind that people forget that renovations are more than a Pinterest board come to life.

There’s budgeting, sourcing actual materials, dealing with contractors, timelines, local regulations, and that emotional collapse (you see this in home renovation shows, and yeah, it will happen to you too). But AI doesn’t know the regulations and licenses you might need, it doesn’t care or understand that you’re on a budget, it just throws things at you that were in its training data, that’s all.

It Also Doesn’t Understand Your Lifestyle

This is exactly why you need a real professional. Do you have kids? Well, AI has never stepped on a Lego barefoot at 3 am to check on their sick kid. It doesn’t understand pets, kids, messy partners, teenagers, or the fact that you need real storage solutions because you’re not a minimalist. AI will happily design a home that looks gorgeous and completely ignore daily life.
Like, yeah, it’ll show off a gorgeous white couch, but if you have dogs, cats, and kids (or any age), well, you know for a fact that couch will be stained and scratched up in no time. Aesthetic renderings will only get you so far, and again, it’s about being realistic, and a professional will help you stay realistic here.
