13-Year Blogiversary: Celebrating with 13 Things I’ve Learned So Far

13-Year Blogiversary: Celebrating with 13 Things I've Learned So Far | City of Creative Dreams

13-year blogiversary. Can you believe it? I honestly can’t.

When I hit “publish” on my very first blog post all those years ago, I had no idea where this journey would take me. I was simply a single mom with a newborn and a deep passion for organizing and creating spaces that truly felt like home. I didn’t know if anyone would read my words or care about my tips, but I knew I had to share them. And now, 13 years later, we are celebrating together.

This milestone isn’t just about me. It’s about you. You’ve been with me through seasons of change, new projects, experiments, and growth. You’ve trusted me with your homes, your struggles, and your stories. And you’ve shown up, and that means the world to me.

What’s Changed (and What Hasn’t)

13-Year Blogiversary: Celebrating with 13 Things I've Learned So Far | City of Creative Dreams

So much has shifted since those early posts.

I have celebrated my 4th wedding anniversary, and my son is starting high school this year, which is crazy to think about since my husband and I met in high school.

My business has continued to stretch in ways I never imagined, too. I am thinking of new ways to expand Inspired by Organizing, whether that is a podcast or an organizing summit. I have a digital printable store, got to be interviewed on the Drip Trickle Flow Flood Podcast and do speaking engagements like HobbyScool: Creative Self-care Summit.

But some things haven’t changed. I’m still the same woman who believes you don’t need a picture-perfect home to feel proud of it. I still know that small steps make the biggest difference. And I still want to walk alongside you in this journey, not above you, not ahead of you, but right beside you.

People sometimes ask me, “How do you keep going after all these years?” And my answer is always the same: because of you.

Blogging hasn’t always been easy. There were times I doubted myself, times I wondered if my words mattered, and times I felt overwhelmed trying to balance everything. But every single comment, email, and message reminded me that what we’re building here is more than a blog. It’s a community. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to figure it all out alone.

That’s why I keep showing up. That’s why 13 years blogiversary later, I still love hitting “publish.”

13 Things I’ve Learned So Far in 13 Years of Organizing (and Life)

13-Year Blogiversary: Celebrating with 13 Things I've Learned So Far | City of Creative Dreams

Since there’s no giveaway this time around, I wanted to give you something else instead: the honest, real lessons I’ve picked up over more than a decade of helping busy women and moms organize their homes and their lives. Consider this my thank-you gift to you.

  1. Done is better than perfect. A drawer that’s “good enough” and actually stays organized beats a picture-perfect one you never maintain.
  2. Small pockets of time count. You don’t need a free weekend to make progress. Fifteen minutes, done consistently, adds up faster than one big overwhelming purge.
  3. Systems matter more than products. No bin, basket, or label maker fixes a system that doesn’t match how you actually live.
  4. Clutter is often a decision problem, not a space problem. The more decisions you can remove from your day (what to wear, where things go, what’s for dinner), the calmer your home feels.
  5. Your home doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s. What works for one family might not work for yours, and that’s completely fine.
  6. Maintenance beats one-time overhauls. A five-minute reset each week will always outlast a single exhausting organizing day.
  7. Give yourself the same grace you’d give a friend. You wouldn’t judge someone else’s cluttered junk drawer. Don’t judge your own.
  8. Ask for help before you’re overwhelmed, not after. Whether that’s delegating at home or reaching out to a community, waiting until you’re drowning makes everything harder.
  9. Your season of life matters. What worked before kids, before a big move, or before a new routine might not work now, and adjusting isn’t failure.
  10. Progress isn’t always visible. Sometimes the biggest wins are the ones nobody else can see, like finally feeling calm walking into your own kitchen.
  11. Community changes everything. I didn’t get through 13 years of this alone, and you don’t have to get through your own organizing journey alone either.
  12. Consistency beats intensity every time. This applies to organizing, to blogging, and honestly, to most things in life.
  13. It’s never too late to start over. Whether it’s a room, a routine, or a whole season of life, you’re always allowed a fresh start.

If even one of these resonates with you today, I’d say that’s a pretty good use of 13 years.

What’s Ahead

13-Year Blogiversary: Celebrating with 13 Things I've Learned So Far | City of Creative Dreams

As I celebrate this 13-year blogiversary milestone, I have so many exciting projects and ideas brewing. More content that serves you, more speaking engagements, and also slowing down to share fun moments of my life on social.

But more than that, I want this space to keep reflecting what you need most. So I’d love to hear from you: what topics would help you right now? What challenges are you facing at home or in your routines? What goals are you chasing that you’d love support with?

Your feedback helps me shape the future of this blog, and I can’t wait to create resources that speak directly to your heart.

Final Thoughts

13 years ago, I was juggling motherhood, being an older sister to my younger siblings, and the everyday chaos of helping run a household. I never would have guessed I’d be writing this 13-year blogiversary post. But here we are. And the best part? We’re just getting started.

So, thank you for reading, for believing, and for being here. You are the reason this blog exists. You are the reason I keep writing. Here’s to 13 years behind us, and many more ahead.
