Unpleasant smells are an enemy to every household. Getting rid of them and supplanting them with more pleasant smells might seems like an uphill battle, but there are steps that you can take to eliminate them. We have compiled a list of 7 tips for keeping your home not only clean but fresh all the time.

Avoid aerosols

Supermarket shelves are always full of air fresheners who are always on discount and you can buy them in bulks. This is a neat marketing trick since you do not really need this product. Moreover, the chemical concoction in them can be detrimental to your health. The scent they release is often too strong and can disturb pets or even small children. It is much wiser to create a home-made air refresher, the ideas, and recipes for which you can find online.

Make use of the washing machine

All houses have a washing machine, but it is mostly used for clothes. People are afraid that it will break down if they put something else in. In reality, there are many things that are washable, but we are not aware of it. For instance, most curtains can be cleaned this way, doing away with the need to vacuum-clean them, which is a tedious process. Essentially, anything that is not sharp, so as not to damage the drum, can be thrown in.

Make time for cleaning

Cleaning should not be a burden if you are good at time management. Make a rough cleaning schedule and try to stick to it as much as possible. This can have one day, Sunday for instance, for the overhaul of the entire house or it can be on a daily basis. You can have a small 10 to 20 minutes power-cleans each day. One day you could dust the living room, the other clean the toilet, the day after that do the kitchen cupboards etc.

Air-conditioning

We already mentioned the scent of the air inside, but more important is its quality. All homes have air-conditioning installed and this is a great solution. However, AC units need to be cleaned and mended regularly, so always have a reliable AC repair contact near at hand. This way the system you gave money for will actually function so you can benefit from it. Also, make sure that the company you opt for offers 24/7 support.

Pets

If you own a pet then you already know that it significantly contributes to all the dirt that accumulates inside the house. Even if it lives outside, the occasional visit to human living quarters wreaks havoc on the cleanliness of the home. The best way to tackle this issue is restricting pets’ access to the house, or even better, keep the pets outside all the time. If you own a dog, you can brush him outside for instance and if you own a cat, her litter box can be placed on the balcony. Minimizing their time of stay indoors decreases the chance of them leaving hair all over the place.

Keeping everything where it belongs

Each item in your home probably has a set place. Umbrellas can be found next to the front door, the toothbrush is in the cabinets over the sink or the books are on the shelf. This is not a matter of order, but of reducing dust as well by reducing motion.

Floors and dust

All the airborne dust eventually has to land somewhere. This is usually the floor, so it is the dirtiest place in any house. Regular cleaning rarely does the trick if the floor surface is unsuitable. Floors made out of cement or stone, typical for garages or larders, tend to give out a lot of dust. Painting them with the right paint can help decrease the amount of dust they emit. If you have parquet inside then make sure that the cleaning agents you use have the anti-static feature. This way, they will tackle not only the dirt problem but the annoying dust as well.

In general, the freshness of a home is achieved with the novel use of the cleaning things and procedures already in place. As in other aspects of life, planning is crucial if you want your home to be in a tip-top state all the time.
