Then we were invited to talk to his manager for more information — you know, the kind where they butter you up by offering “free gifts” or “exclusive experiences” for your time. The presentation itself was impressive. They showed gorgeous destinations, smiling families, and talked about saving thousands over the years on luxury vacations.

Everything sounded logical — invest a large amount now, pay monthly to keep service, pay one annual fee per year, and you’ll have guaranteed vacation access. As a busy mom juggling family and business, that kind of convenience was appealing. No more last-minute searches for hotels or trying to squeeze deals out of travel sites. I could just plan, book, and go.

At the time, it felt like we were making a smart, future-focused decision. But once the excitement faded and the fine print came into play, I realized this membership was far more complex than it initially appeared.

 

The Reality Behind the “Dream Membership”

Let me be clear — the Royal Holiday membership does offer access to resorts, cruises and destinations around parts of the world. That part is true. You pay a monthly fee and an annual fee. That is true. You are provided with yearly credits with an option to roll over to the next year if you wish. Very true. But what you might not realize at first is how long the commitment actually is and how limited your flexibility can become once you’ve signed the contract.

The membership doesn’t just last a few years. It’s not a typical subscription that you can cancel anytime. It’s a multi-decade commitment — thirty years. That’s three whole decades of annual fees, usage rules, and renewal requirements.

When I first learned about the 30-year timeline, it was honestly shocking. Most families, especially young ones, don’t think in 30-year travel commitments. Life changes — jobs change, kids grow up, finances shift — and yet this membership continues year after year, with very little wiggle room to step away.

  • The membership is not easy to cancel. Once you sign, you’re locked into an agreement that isn’t flexible. Even if you can’t travel one year (or several), the annual fees still apply.
  • Availability can vary. You might not always get the destinations or dates you want. Planning ahead is essential — but even then, availability can be limited depending on your membership level or points.
  • Fees continue regardless of usage. This means you could pay for years without using the membership if life gets busy, finances tighten, or your priorities change.
  • Resale or transfer options are complicated. Some people think they can just “sell” their membership later, but that process can be difficult, and in many cases, not financially beneficial.

Again, I’m not saying this to discredit the company — I’m simply sharing what I wish I had known. These are the realities that don’t always come up in the excitement of a vacation sales pitch.

 

Notice Contract Red Flags

At first, everything about travel memberships, such as a Royal Holiday Membership, sounds like a dream. But the moment you want to cancel or start going through the paperwork — really reading the fine print — reality sets in. It turns out, what you had signed wasn’t a simple travel club.
Based on what I learned from reading my own Royal Holiday contract, here are the kinds of clauses you should look out for in any travel membership agreement. Watch out for these big red flags before signing:

1. 30-Year Binding Term

See if your contract clearly states that the membership will last thirty (30) consecutive years, with no renewal or opt-out clause after that period. Thirty years is a lifetime commitment. The problem is that it’s easy to assume this is like a typical travel subscription — something you can renew or cancel as your life changes. It’s not. Once you sign, you’re legally bound for the full term, which can feel extremely unfair, especially if that wasn’t made clear upfront.

2. Non-Refundable Clause

Here’s the part that can really catch you off guard. The contract may say that all payments made remain as a benefit of the seller, even if you cancel. In plain language, that means once your money is in their hands, it’s gone. There are no refunds — even if you change your mind or realize it’s not a good fit. This heavily favours the company and leaves you with no consumer protection if things go wrong.

3. Jurisdiction in the Places that are not the USA or Canada

See if your contract mentions that all disputes must be handled under [Insert any other place that isn’t USA or Canada here] law (example, Dominican Republic). If you live in Canada or the U.S., this means you can’t easily take legal action locally. You’d need a lawyer based there to handle any disputes — an expensive and complicated process. This is something I personally hadn’t considered when signing, and I think most travellers wouldn’t either. It also means you’re dealing with laws and protections that may not match your own country’s consumer rights.

4. Promissory Note (Separate Debt Instrument)

Take special notice of this part of any agreement because it’s shocking. Along with the membership, you do not want to unknowingly sign a separate promissory note for over $8,000 USD, payable over four to five years at nearly 5-10% interest.

Which means if you miss a single payment, the entire balance becomes immediately due — with additional late fees and collection costs. This note is considered an independent debt, meaning even if you cancel the membership, you’re still on the hook for the money. It’s a financial trap that can follow you long after you’ve stopped using their services.

5. No Right of Rescission or Cooling-Off Period

In many countries, consumers have a short window to cancel certain contracts — often called a cooling-off period. See if your contract makes mention of that. Because once you sign, there’s no clear way to cancel within a reasonable time frame. That’s concerning, especially since most people sign these memberships while on vacation, often under pressure and without time to review the details carefully.

6. Ongoing Annual Fees Regardless of Use

See if your contract mentions that even if you decide not to travel, you’re still required to pay the annual maintenance fee. It is good to know in advance if you are required to pay around $500 USD or more each year. Also, see if the contract allows that amount to increase at their discretion. So you’re not only committing for thirty years, but you also have to budget for yearly fees, whether or not you ever use the membership.

7. Non-Transferability Without Club Approval

Another tricky clause that may be in your travel membership contract is that you can’t sell, transfer, or assign your membership to someone else without written authorization from the company. That means you can’t even pass it on to a family member or sell it if you no longer want it. The company has total control over who, if anyone, can take over your membership. It’s a closed system designed to keep you tied in.

8. Automatic Debit Authorization

Lastly, see if the contract allows the company to automatically charge your card for payments — and cancelling your card or auto-pay doesn’t cancel your legal obligation. In other words, even if you try to stop payments, the company can claim you’re in breach of contract. It’s a setup that makes it very difficult to fully disconnect financially.
