Great Ways to Work and Travel Around the Globe

Digital nomadism is a trend that’s getting more and more popularized with each passing hour. However, there’s more to it than just taking your laptop with you and setting aside several hours per day to work a bit. The job of a digital nomad is never really done, keeping this lifestyle sustainable requires a decent stability of income and you can’t just hop jobs at your own behest. Therefore, like everything else in life, the art of successful digital nomadism is something that needs to be mastered. So, here are several tips on different ways to work and travel around the globe.

1. Location-independent versus jobs that require travel

The first thing you need to understand is that there’s a difference between location-independent businesses and jobs that require travel. The perfect example of the latter is travel blogging, which, some people find quite lucrative, despite the fact that it’s fairly expensive as a lifestyle. The greatest problem with the latter lies in the fact that you’re either compelled to constantly travel (which isn’t mandatory with a location-independent job) or find a large number of contributors. The latter, although more frugal and somewhat effective, never gives the same end result.

2. Seasonal work is always an option

The next thing you need to understand is the fact that the job you perform in a digital environment doesn’t necessarily have to be your only source of income. Think about it, why would you travel the globe just in order to change the location of the hotel room/coffee shop you’re typing from? This really doesn’t make any sense. So, it might be a smart idea to look for some seasonal work once you arrive at your target destination. Most of these digital nomad hotspots are popular touristic destinations, which means that the demand for temporary labor is quite formidable. Ski resort employees, waiters or tour guides are always needed in these areas.

3. Watch out for visas

In the introduction, we mentioned that it’s absurd assuming you can just hop borders as you see fit, seeing as how different countries have different visa programs. For instance, in Australia, there were some changes, as of lately, which are making it somewhat more difficult to get a work visa. This is why digital nomads who are determined to visit this continent-country need to consider consulting migration agent from Sydney and ask for a bit of advice.

4. Develop some habits

While the very point of working while on the run aims to deconstruct the myth about a traditional workplace, it’s worth keeping in mind that habits help keep you organized. Therefore, you need to figure out what kind of work regimen you find the most compelling. Working from hotels is not the same thing as working from the coffee shop, while some people specifically target tropical destination so that they can work from the beach. Overall, it’s worth surveying the location you aim to visit prior to going there and marking any place of interest.

5. Go with safer

Like a tourist, a digital nomad is easy to spot even from a mile away. Moreover, as a digital nomad, getting mugged is a proper nightmare, seeing as how a theft of a cellphone, PayPal card and a laptop is no short of a disaster. Even if you do keep all that you have in the cloud, it would take months to make up for all of these losses. This is why it’s probably for the best if you were to pick somewhat safer places to visit and parts of town to stay in. This is also one of the reasons why cities like Porto are getting more and more popular with digital nomads.

6. Ensure that your digital arsenal is up to date

With the help of the right apps, you can make the lifestyle of a digital nomad much simpler. For starters, an app as simple as Wi-Fi map can be of an immense help in traversing an unknown location in search for today’s workstation. Next, you also need Yelp and Uber in order to get your way around town. While an adequate currency exchange app wouldn’t be a bad idea either. Finally, you should keep in mind the fact that your expenses might be somewhat harder to predict while on the run. Which is why you should also include a finance app to your digital arsenal, as soon as possible.

In conclusion

The thing about working and travelling at the same time is that it creates a lot of difficulties. Even when it comes to menial day-to-day tasks, while the outsiders tend to focus solely on the positive. Fortunately, where there’s a will, there’s always a way. Sometimes, the solution to this problem can be found in technology. At other times, in your ability to manage your own time and resources. Either way, practicing this unorthodox lifestyle helps you grow and develop as a person.
