Ikea Hack: Refreshing ORDNA Mini Chest

IKEA’s As-Is section always rocks… well most of the time and, this time, is no different. I realize that it is a must for me to step foot into their As Is section whenever I go to IKEA because you never know what you are going to find. This trip (I say that as if I live very far… I can see Ikea from my apartment window) I found ORDNA Mini chest for $0.60 cents. 60 cents! The original price is $2.99 so I have to say this was well an amazing deal.

What am I going to do with it? Have no clue on where I should place this yet, my mind was gearing towards updating it and giving it to my little sister, either way, I had to buy it. Until I found my inspiration to start this project I stored it on the side of my bed (where all things I have yet to finish, donate or wash goes.) It wasn’t until I went to Micheal’s (for the first time… I know a long time overdue) that I actually figured out what I wanted to do. The front of the drawers needed to get a refreshing look. It needs something to go with my little sister’s desk.

Here is what it looks like.

Here is what it looks like without the drawers.

I think when you first buy the original product in the packaging it comes flat and you have to put it together. Since my was already done for me, I got to skip that step. I did, however not like that the flaps of the box were easy to come apart.

I decided to use a glue gun to hold the box sides together. With kids, you need to make sure the product stays together or it will not last very long.
I saw this scrapbook paper at Micheal’s for 99 cents and thought it was perfect.
I cut the paper in half because it was too big.
Place the paper on the front of the drawer and use your finger to outline the sides. The outline will remain on the paper.
Make a little cut on each side.
Take the glue gun and glue down the front and the sides.
Poke a hole with scissors and smooth out the sides. Glue down any extra paper sticking out.
Repeat the process with the second drawer and you have a refreshed set of drawers. My little sister turned the drawers in a vertical direction and added her barbie clothing inside.
Here is the before and after:

  1. Great idea! I have some similar cubbies, with 6 drawers each that I got for $1 each at an estate sale. I just might do this!!! Unfortunately I can't see IKEA from where I live, but it isn't so far that I can't go once a week or so! But I don't……so I don't even know where the 'AS IS' section is! I will definitely look for it next time I go! Thanks! Dona

    1. Don't worry I was the same until my mom told me about the As Is section. I was in complete shock, not only that they had that section but that they had that section and my mom knew about it way before I did lol.
