Anyone out there looking for hair products and tools for their natural black coarse hair? Tell me that I’m not alone in creating a healthy black hair routine. Have you ever looked at someone’s healthy, natural hair and thought, “What are they using?” I know I have.
For years, I really did not know how to take care of my hair. I’ve watched YouTube videos of different people with my skin colour using products. Buying every trending product from my social media feed. I’ve tried many new shampoos, deep conditioners, creams, and oils that promised amazing results.
Before long, my search became exhausting. One thing had this but not the other. I felt like a unicorn. I was searching for real, all-natural products (no sulphates, parabens, phthalates), no nuts (peanuts or almonds), no fragrance/parfum. Plus, it needs to actually clean, hydrate my hair, protect and repair damage, and promote healthy hair growth. Sounds impossible, right? It doesn’t have to be, but it does require a lot of research. You can use tools like Google AI Mode to give you a helping hand.
My Hair Philosophy

Healthy Black hair is about choosing the right products and creating a routine you can actually stick with. If you’ve been following City of Creative Dreams for a while, you already know I love organizing every part of life, which includes my healthy black hair routine. I don’t want overflowing cabinets filled with products I never touch. Instead, I want products that truly work, simplify my routine, and help me keep my hair healthy without adding more stress.
Today, I’m sharing the products and tools I genuinely use and love. Every person’s hair is different, so what works for me may not work exactly the same for you. However, if you’re looking for a simple starting point, these are products I’d happily recommend.

Wash Day Essentials

I am not going to lie, wash days are not my favourite part of my weekend. However, a wash day can set the tone for everything else if it is done right. It also begins with a specially curated Spotify playlist for this occasion. No one wants to spend their entire weekend trapped doing their hair if there’s a faster way to get it done. When my hair starts with plenty of moisture, styling becomes easier, and it feels healthier throughout the week.
Melanin Haircare Black Soap Reviving Shampoo
Currently my favourite shampoos is Melanin Haircare Black Soap Reviving Shampoo. It cleans my scalp without making my hair feel stripped or dry, which is incredibly important for textured hair. Instead of leaving my hair feeling squeaky and brittle, my hair still feels soft and manageable after washing.
Why I love it:
- Cleans away buildup gently
- Doesn’t leave my hair feeling dry
- Great for maintaining moisture

Melanin Haircare Plumping Deep Conditioner
Recently, I switched out the SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque because it was over-coating my hair and not washing out completely, so I kept getting annoying flakes.
Now, my favourite one-treatment product, Melanin Haircare Plumping Deep Conditioner, is at the top of my list. It gives my hair the hydration it craves. Whenever my hair starts feeling dull or dry, this is the product I reach for. Healthy hair needs moisture, and deep conditioning has become one of the biggest game changers in my routine.
Why I love it:
- Leaves my hair noticeably softer
- Makes detangling much easier
- Helps reduce dryness

SEEN Fragrance-Free Leave-In Conditioner
Once wash day is finished, I always follow up with a leave-in conditioner. I love the SEEN Fragrance-Free Leave-In Conditioner because it provides lightweight hydration without a heavy residue. Since it’s fragrance-free, it’s also a wonderful option for anyone with sensitive skin or who simply prefers fragrance-free products.
Why I love it:
- Lightweight moisture
- Doesn’t weigh my hairdown
- Fragrance-free

My Favourite Hair Tools

Find the right tools matter! Therefore, it is best to say that great products deserve great tools. These are the tools that make my routine faster, easier, and gentler on my hair.
Tangle Teezer Ultimate Detangler Curly Hair Brush

I used to dread detangling my hair. Not anymore. The Tangle Teezer Ultimate Detangler Curly Hair Brush surprisingly glides through my hair when I use it with conditioner. Instead of fighting knots, I can work through my curls section by section with much less breakage. Plus, they got it in my favourite colour too! Tip: Brush vertically, not horizontally.
Why I love it:
- Gentle on my hair
- Makes detangling easier
- Helps reduce breakage
- Different colours to choose from

Microfiber Hair Towel

I discovered that regular bath towels create more friction than my hair needs. Instead, I gently wrap my hair in a microfiber towel after washing. It absorbs excess water while helping minimize frizz and unnecessary breakage.

Wavytalk Hair Dryer

This is by far my favourite hairdryer out of the many ones I have had prior. When I reach for my Wavytalk Hair Dryer, it helps me dry my hair much faster while giving me more control over the process. I mostly use the comb attachment, but I love having the other options as well.
Why I love it:
- Cuts down drying time
- Easy to use
- Great addition to wash day

Wavytalk Pro Steam Hair Straightener Brush

I love using my Wavytalk Steam Straightener Comb after I blow dry my hair. The steam feature makes the straightening process smoother while helping my hair retain moisture better than traditional hot combs, flat irons or steam flat irons. I was surprised that it worked on my hair type, but it actually does an amazing job.

Protecting My Hair Between Wash Days

Healthy hair isn’t just about wash day. It’s also about protecting your hair every single day. Therefore, I am excited to share some of my favourite items that keep my hair protected each day.
Hairbrella Satin-Lined Shower Cap

One of my favourite discoveries has been the Hairbrella Satin-Lined Shower Cap. Unlike basic shower caps, this one has a satin lining that helps protect my hairstyle while keeping moisture from ruining it during showers. Plus, it’s comfortable enough that I don’t feel like I’m squeezing my head into plastic.
Why I love it:
- Keeps my hairstyle protected
- Satin lining helps reduce friction
- Comfortable to wear
- Washable

Grace Eleyae Navy Satin-Lined Knot Turban

Every night, I wear my Grace Eleyae Satin-Lined Knot Turban to protect my hair. It keeps my hair moisturized and frizz-free while I sleep, and it also looks stylish as I walk around the house. I love the silk liner and the different colours I can choose from.
Why I love it:
- Hidden adjustable drawstrings
- Adjustable knot to custom turban look/fit
- Pretied knot so I don’t have to do it myself

Grace Eleyae Chunky Knit Satin-Lined Beanie

Canadian winters can be rough on textured hair. That’s why I love my Grace Eleyae Satin-Lined Beanie. The satin lining protects my hair while keeping my head warm, which means I don’t have to choose between healthy hair and staying cozy. Honestly, every knit hat should come with satin lining.

How I Organize My Hair Products

You knew this section was coming. I organize my hair products the same way I organize my home. Instead of tossing everything into one giant basket, I group products by how I actually use them. For example:
Wash Day
- Shampoo
- Deep Conditioner
- Hair Dryer
- Microfiber Towel (behind door in washroom)
Styling
- Leave-In Conditioner
- Detangling Brush
- Straightener Comb
Hair Protection
- Shower Cap (behind door in washroom)
- Turban (under pillow for night)
- Satin-Lined Beanie (in hat section for winter season)
This simple system helps me grab exactly what I need without digging through clutter.
Final Thoughts

If you’re starting your healthy black hair routine, don’t feel pressured to buy everything at once. These are items I have collected over the past few years. You should begin with a few essentials that fit your current routine. As your hair changes, your routine will probably change too—and that’s completely okay. Your hair is never going to be perfect; therefore, find products you genuinely enjoy using.
I’d love to hear from you in the comments! What’s one hair product you absolutely can’t live without? I’m always looking for new recommendations to try.
