Because when I was planning my own wedding, I remember seeing that number and thinking, absolutely not. We planned a beautiful micro wedding on a small budget, and I promise you, it was still meaningful, still gorgeous, and still exactly what we wanted our day to be.
So today, I’m breaking down how to plan a wedding on a tight budget using a real month-by-month approach. No vague “just save more” advice. Just a practical plan you can actually follow.

Before you book a single vendor, sit down and decide your absolute must-haves versus your nice-to-haves.
For us, having close family present mattered more than a huge guest list. Good food mattered more than an elaborate cake. Once you know your non-negotiables, every future decision becomes easier because you’re not choosing based on Pinterest; you’re choosing based on your actual priorities.
This is also the time to set a realistic total number and break it into rough categories: venue, food, attire, photography, décor, and the miscellaneous “just in case” fund you’ll be very glad you created.
Months 3–4: Lock In Your Biggest Expenses First
Your venue and your date typically eat up the largest chunk of any wedding budget, so tackle these early.
Consider off-peak days or seasons, since many venues lower prices outside the busiest wedding months. Also look at spaces that don’t scream “wedding venue,” like community halls, parks, photo studios, or even a backyard. Sometimes the most character-filled spaces cost the least.
This is also a great time to request all-inclusive packages from vendors, since bundled pricing often saves more than booking everything separately.
Months 5–6: Handle Attire Without the Markup
Wedding attire has a way of multiplying in cost the second you attach the word “bridal” to it.
Look at sample sales, off-the-rack dresses, or even bridesmaid-style dresses in white or ivory instead of traditional “bridal” labels. The same goes for suits. A well-fitted suit from a regular menswear store often looks just as sharp as one from a specialty formalwear shop, minus the specialty price tag.

Food and drinks can either be one of your biggest expenses or one of your smartest savings opportunities, depending on how you approach it.
Buffet-style meals are almost always more budget-friendly than plated dinners. A smaller, curated menu often feels more intentional than an overwhelming spread anyway. If your venue allows outside catering or a potluck-style contribution from family, that can significantly cut costs while adding a personal touch guests will remember.
For drinks, consider a limited bar with a few signature cocktails instead of an open bar with every option imaginable.
Months 9–10: DIY the Details That Matter Most to You
This is where your personality gets to shine without draining your budget. Centrepieces, signage, favours, and small décor details are some of the easiest places to DIY. You don’t need to make everything, just the pieces that genuinely matter to you. For everything else, give yourself permission to keep it simple.
Month 11: Confirm, Confirm, and Confirm
With one month to go, finalize every vendor contract, confirm your final guest count, and lock in your day-of timeline. This is also the perfect time to build a simple visual schedule for your vendors and wedding party, so nobody has to guess what happens next. A clear plan prevents last-minute costs that pop up simply because something wasn’t communicated ahead of time.
Month 12: Enjoy the Day You Actually Planned For
By the time your wedding day arrives, you’ll have made every decision with intention instead of pressure. And that’s the real win here. A budget-friendly wedding doesn’t mean a lesser wedding. It means a wedding that reflects what actually matters to you, without starting your marriage buried under unnecessary debt.
