Matching Your Bridesmaids Dresses to Your Wedding Gown

Most bridal parties are pretty unified. When talking about the wedding outfits, they are usually wearing something pre-planned and coordinated, and they look quite stunning. While how they look isn’t the most important thing of that day, a lot of thought and money goes into putting together the perfect outfits for all people involved – bridesmaids definitely not excluded. But if you want to make sure everything fits together, you want to also match your own dress to your bridesmaids’. It will make the entire envoy come together and look perfectly in sync. So how should you go about doing this?

Match them with each other

Before you start thinking about how you’re going to match them with yourself, you want to match them with each other. If they are each wearing a different dress, then matching with you is going to be five times the trouble. This doesn’t mean that they have to wear the exact same dress, but they should match at least in the same way they’re going to match with you, which we will explore a bit later. If you want to take it a step further, you should also think about whether or not they match with the opposite side. The groomsmen can wear ties, bow ties or vests that match the color or style of the bridesmaids’ dresses. It is a simple way to bring everything together and make it look extremely elegant.

Match the style

One way you can look like you and your bridesmaids belong together is to match the style of the dress you are all wearing. For example, if you are wearing a tea-length dress, they can wear the same style in a different color. But, what if you want to wear a princess ballgown? It wouldn’t look that good if there were five or six women in ballgowns standing next to each other, but the style you are going for is elegant, so having your bridesmaids shop for something long and elegant will match beautifully. There aren’t many rules about whether you should buy the wedding dress or the bridesmaids’ gowns first, but it’s a good idea to shop together. Have a girls’ night in and look at bridesmaid dresses online, discussing the styles that would suit you and the best matching style for them. If you have a vintage theme or a Greek goddess theme, then all of your dresses should fit that same style.

Match the material

Materials play a huge role in how a dress will look, flow and fit, so even if you wear the exact same dress as your bridesmaids, only in a different material, it will look like a completely different dress, and won’t be matching. If you choose a classic material such as satin, then you can simply have all of the dresses made out of satin, and you will match like magic. But there are more subtle ways to do this, too. For example, if you have a full lace bodice, your bridesmaids can have cap or full-length sleeves from the same lace. It will bring your looks together while keeping everything elegant. Be aware that not all materials go well with all dress styles, so if your plan is to have different dresses made out of the same material, be prepared that it might not be so easy.

Match the details

If you can’t find a dress that matches, it’s not the end of the world, and you and your bridesmaids don’t have to look like you accidentally ended up at the same wedding. You can do it with something as simple as wearing the same headpiece, or the same belt. If you have a beautiful wildflower bouquet, make matching headbands for the bridesmaids and let their inner boho princesses shine. You can even do it through necklaces, bracelets, shoes or jackets.

There is no rule about having to match with your bridesmaids, but it will add a beautiful harmony to the overall look and feel of the wedding. If you’re already putting effort into planning outfits, this will seem like just a detail. And on top of everything, when the day has passed, your bridesmaids will have something that truly reminds them of their connection to you and that special day.
