1. Start with Research

The first step is to start researching. It is the same as if you are searching for any other wedding vendor but this time you are searching for Black-owned businesses for your wedding. Research is key because it does take the time to seek out Black-owned vendors and businesses in your area or online.

What worked for me was to search on websites like Instagram, and directories specifically dedicated to Black-owned businesses. These sites can be valuable resources for finding everything from wedding planners and photographers to florists and caterers. As well as ask friends or family for recommendations.

2. Choose Black-Owned Vendors

Make a list of your top three vendors that you want to reach out to. Try your best to select vendors that are Black-owned businesses whenever possible as I know some cities may not have everything you need. Whether you’re hiring a wedding planner, booking a photographer, or choosing a caterer, look for vendors who share your values and see your wedding vision. Reach out to them directly to inquire about their services and availability, and don’t hesitate to ask for references or examples of their work.

3. Shop Black-Owned Brands

From wedding attire to decor and accessories, countless Black-owned brands are creating beautiful and unique products for weddings. If they are within your wedding budget, consider purchasing your wedding gown or suit from a Black-owned designer, or accessorize your bridal party with jewelry and accessories from Black-owned boutiques. If you are unable to find something in your style or in your wedding vision, you can also support Black-owned beauty brands for your hair and makeup needs.

4. Incorporate Cultural Elements

Incorporating cultural elements doesn’t have to be solely about wedding festivities. It can be music, food, or customs passed down through generations that are infused into your wedding. Consider hiring a Black-owned DJ or band to play music that reflects your cultural background or just suits your musical style. You can also consider serving traditional dishes from Black-owned caterers or restaurants.

5. Spread the Word

Spreading the word is powerful and the best way to support Black-owned businesses. Your positive experiences with these vendors can open the door to others wanting to work with them. Therefore take the time to use your platform to spread the word – whether through social media, wedding forums, or word of mouth to friends, family, and fellow brides and grooms.
Your recommendation of Black-owned vendors and businesses helps amplify their voices and showcase their talents. Ultimately helping to create more visibility and opportunities for these businesses.
